Heritage Auctions is holding the Signature Vintage Comics and Comic Art Auction on Thursday in New York. The highlight will be the original splash page from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. It is most definitely a highly collectible comic art work. The Batman artwork is part of the Miller’s 1986 limited series. Many of the high net worth individuals of today were growing up then and would almost be connecting emotionally or nostalgically to it. It is evident from the fact that the bidding has already touched $100,000 in the art auction.
According to the auctioneers its pre sale estimate is in the range of $125,000 and is considered one of the most valuable pieces of comic book art to go up under the hammer in years. Barry Sandoval, the head of Heritage’s comics division tried to put the valuation in perspective by giving the example of cover art for Batman No. 11 which holds the record of highest price recorded for a piece of comic art at $195,000. This piece was created in 1940s and Miller’s creation of the 1980s coming close to it is being considered mind boggling in the comic art circles.
The Heritage auctions on Thursday will see several pieces from the comic art history. The Dark Knight art is in a class of its own but there are several other pieces with historical significance that are estimated to go for much lower prices.
