Diamond Solitaire by Montblanc to Lead the Auction by Bonhams & Butterfields

Montblanc is synonymous with fine and expensive writing instruments. And there have been a series of remarkable limited edition pens made by them over the years. But even they outdid themselves when they created the most extraordinary and exclusive fountain pen ever made, the Montblanc Meisterstuck Solitaire Royal LeGrand, aka the legendary Diamond Solitaire. Bonhams & Butterfields the famous auction house is organizing a sale of Fine Writing Instruments in Los Angeles on May 23 and the Diamond Solitaire will be the highlight of the auctions.

The pre sale estimate for the legendary pen is around $175,000. It will not be a surprise if the bidding goes on beyond the estimate at the Bonhams & Butterfields‘ auctions. The extraordinary pen made with 18ct yellow gold barrel and a cap top emblem composed of seven diamonds is set with over 4,600 brilliant cut white diamonds. It is easily one of the most exclusive creations by Montblanc and it was only made to order in limited quantities. The Diamond Solitaire will be leading a collection of over 200 extraordinary fountain pens in the stunning sales. Montblanc being the undisputed leader in the field the bulk of the pens in the auction will be Montblancs.

The Diamond Solitaire is rarely seen at an auction and that will make the bidding for it that much more aggressive. But there are some other important pens that will go under the hammer. Another Montblanc special that will be seen at the auction is the Sir Winston Churchill fountain pen, the last of only 53 produced. It is known that Churchill preferred Montblanc pens and used them to sign some very important documents that changed the course of history. It is an 18ct rose gold pen inlaid with tortoise shell lacquer bands, along with a cap top ringed with 53 diamonds. The pen is estimated to fetch a price between $15,000 and $25,000.

  • I missed an opportunity to buy a Mont Blanc Solitaire Royal LeGrand eight years ago and have regretted it ever since. The price has escalated along with its scarcity. It will be interesting to see what price it fetches.
