Only in fairy tales do you see homes like this. Not anymore! This so-called “Mushroom House” in Pittsford, New York costs $1.1 million, in case you are really interested in living in a mushroom. Located beside Powder Mill Park, this house that seems to have jumped right of the fantasy books is a three-bedroom, three-bath home surrounded by greenery.
Architect James H. Johnson is credited with this one-of-a-kind pod-style home that was apparently inspired by a stem of Queen Anne’s Lace, a wild carrot native to Europe and southwest Asia. The species was later introduced to North America. The 1.2-acre property may seem straight out of a fictional world, but it has all the necessary amenities for a modern home; but with some fantastic flourishes of course. Where else would you find a family room with a fountain?
The family room is crafted out of a knoll below the pods. A tunnel runs through connecting the pods. The Mushroom House has a spacious master bedroom suite as well as a guest suite. There is also a patio, and the garage accommodates three cars. One of the highlights of this unique luxury home is the Wendell Castle designed mahogany door and frame. Various other artists are credited with the sand molded walls and ceilings.
On the first floor is the laundry area. Mosaic-tiled gas fireplaces offer heating, while zoned air conditioning provides the cooling. In the kitchen stand an oven, a dishwasher, a microwave and a refrigerator. This unusual luxury home may have been built in 1971, but it certainly has managed to keep up with the times.
