Michael Jackson has proved yet again that he is the indubitable King of Pop. At a recent auction, the red and black jacket that he had worn in the iconic “Thriller” video sold for a whopping $1.8 million. The auctioneers had estimated that the famous jacket with winged shoulders would sell for between $200,000 and $400,000. The final selling price far surpassed the initial estimation.
The Michael Jackson jacket went under the hammer at Julien’s auction in Beverly Hills over the weekend. The money that has been raised will be donated to the Shambala Preserve, the sanctuary that is home to the pop icon’s two Bengal tigers.
The jacket, which has an inscription on the lining, also bears Michael Jackson’s signature on one of the sleeves. The words, “Love Michael Jackson” may have additionally boosted the price of this Jackson memorabilia. The jacket had remained in the possession of the pop singer’s costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. They were to reference the jacket for future concert performances of the hit number.
Other Jackson memorabilia that sold at the auction included the fedora hat from his Bad Tour, a handwritten note to Elizabeth Taylor and a signed pillowcase. These were sold for $16,250, $5,625 and $3,584. What turned out to be another big ticket item at this celebrity memorabilia auction were Jackson’s signature crystal-encrusted gloves. This sold for a staggering $330,000.
Other money-spinners at the auction included Ringo Starr’s cape from the movie “Help!” ($37,500), Paul McCartney‘s bass guitar ($14,080) and Frank Sinatra’s 1986 Jaguar ($19,000).
