With the Quatar’s royal family in control of the iconic luxury departmental store Harrods, they are redefining the meaning of luxury retail. Harrods has always been known for its luxurious offerings but they are now becoming astronomic and even obscene. The Quataris’ sense of luxury knows no boundaries. Anything that their ultra rich clientele might want should be made available at the store. They have recently introduced items like an alligator skin umbrella and a pair of mink underpants. Now they have entered into a deal with London yacht brokerage Watkins to offer a range of luxury yachts, superyachts and megayachts right in the store.
Harrods is now offering the entire range of yachts, right from the $11 million Ron Holland designed Kestrel 106 built in Turkey to the ultra-cool $165 million 295-ft. Fincantieri project Mars from Italy by London-based H2 Yacht Design team. There are many others in between. Some of the other models that you could now purchase from Harrods are a a semi-displacement 213-ft. Heesen superyacht with an interior design by Bannenberg and Rowell, and the 246-ft. Mogambo due for delivery in March 2012.
This new section of the luxury departmental store will also offer luxe charters along with outright sales. People in the know believe that this new division has been developed to meet the needs of the oligarch and oil sheikh set. Adrian McCourt, Managing Director of Watkins feels that there is lot of potential for charters and purchases amongst the ultra rich of the region who normally don’t bother to travel to yacht shows. They find it more convenient and comfortable to meet the team of experts and discuss the potential offers without the hard sell of the shows. They have practically brought Monaco into Harrods.
