Luxury cars are yesterday’s news. Custom cars are the way to go. So when Ferrari finally entered the “Pimp My Ride” world in its Ferrari SpA avatar last month, it was an indicator that customizing is no longer the exclusive domain of independent startups. Wealthy customers not only want high-end cars, they want bespoke auto interiors. Money is not an issue.
Thus, Ferrari SpA can happily outfit a $410,000 599 GTB with cashmere trimmings, pushing prices up by anywhere between 20 to 40 percent. The target customer will happily part with the money. Moreover, luxury car brand Ferrari is not alone in the custom car market. It is following in the footsteps of such luxury car manufacturers as Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and Maserati. What is it about custom cars that make us drool? Is it the exclusivity? The never-before-seen designs? The exorbitant prices? Perhaps it is a combination of all this and more. Decide for yourself. Check out this list of luxury cars and their stunning interiors.

2. Bentley Mulsanne
Customized By: Bentley
Price: 250,000 euros for the standard model; 100,000 euros for the customization – a total of approximately $482,615
The Bentley Mulsanne is a spacious luxury car that runs on twin-turbo V8 engines. Earlier this year, Bentley sought to give it a luxury upgrade using the Executive Interior Concept. This involved several add-ons including two iPads, a Mac Mini in the trunk, and an all-controlling Magic Trackpad located in the rear seats. This Mulsanne is as high-tech as it comes, perfect for the busy professional who values constant connectivity. The Executive Interior Concept ensures that s/he is never too far from the office.
3. Mercedes Benz G Class
Customized By: Louis Vuitton
A collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Mercedes Benz is a big deal. At the end of last year, we had covered this high-profile tie-up – one that promised the best in style and luxury for the luxury auto industry. The Louis Vuitton-styled Mercedes Benz G Class is a couture vehicle if ever there were one. The interiors will remind you of the iconic Louis Vuitton handbag. The famous Louis Vuitton monogram pattern fabric makes an appearance on the upholstery of these high-end cars. We wouldn’t be surprised if someone drove this baby on to a fashion runway.
4. Vintage 1962 Cadillac
Customization Theme: Louis Vuitton
Price: $100,000
Fashionistas who love their Louis Vuitton purses would have fallen for this vintage Cadillac with its Louis Vuitton upholstery. The car looks like it sped away from the Louis Vuitton workshop. The famous Louis Vuitton monogrammed pattern appears on the seats, on the doors, and most noticeably, on the convertible’s roof. Of course, all of it matches perfectly with the Cadillac’s metallic orange body.
5. Cadillac Escalade
Customized By: Takashi Murakami
Customization Theme: Louis Vuitton
This Cadillac Escalade is dressed up like a Louis Vuitton bag. Artist Luis Gispert chanced upon this luxury car during a project. The owners knew nothing about Murakami at all, but they bought the car because loved they loved Louis Vuitton and they loved the colors – which is probably a back-handed compliment to Murakami. The green car interiors pop against upholstery that bears the words Louis Vuitton Paris in a never-ending loop. Very pop art. We love it!
6. Burberry BMW
Customized By: Burberry
If the Louis Vuitton-themed Cadillac was young and vibrant, the Burberry BMW is more sedate in plaid. But it is no less quirky. Also part of Luis Gispert’s photo project, this auto interior design generously incorporates Burberry’s signature plaid into a classic BMW. Again, this is high fashion meeting luxury automobiles – an indication of what the modern luxury buyer wants. We wish more luxury cars would boast of interiors like this one.
7. Chevrolet Caprice
Customized By: Fendi
Gispert’s project included another custom car – and we could not take our eyes of it. This was the Chevrolet Caprice, outfitted fashionably by luxury brand Fendi. For starters, we loved the bold color combinations. Why don’t more luxury cars appear in bright colors like this Caprice with its blue interiors. Colorful Fendi logos provide an eye-catching contrast to the basic blue. The logos add a quirky touch to the doors, the central console, the doors, and so on.
More Car Interiors That We Love
The final three vehicles on this list are not your typical custom cars. But their bespoke designs ensured them spots on the “Best Car Interiors 2011” list of American auto industry magazine Ward’s. These luxury car interiors had us drooling over every last detail. We had to put them on this list. Don’t hold it against us. Take a peek.
8. Audi A8
Price: $93,525
Ward’s named Audi A8 the “Design Leader for Luxury Car Interiors”. Look inside and you will understand why. The seat backs feature high-gloss wood. The door panels have (of all things) suede inserts. The auto interior designers for this car clearly had one focus – ensure comfort for the user. Thus, even the gear shifter on the central console serves as a comfortable rest for the right hand, while the driver operates the multimedia interface central controller.
9. BMW X3 xDrive35i
Price: $52,025
Attention to detail is one of the USPs of BMW cars. But the BMW X3 xDrive35i is better still. Slip into the driver’s seat for a feel of these luxury auto interiors. The black and cream color palette mingles with the rich wood detailing on the doors, the dashboard and the main console. In true BMW-style, the finishing is flawless. The car also features fold-flat seating. Five people can comfortably fit into this luxury vehicle.
10. Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit
Price: $48,770
The American wild west is celebrated in the interiors of this luxury car. We love the prominent stitching on the leather seats. The deep tan color adds to the rugged appeal of this masculine vehicle. The use of leather extends to the instrument panel and the doors as well. This V8-powered SUV is tough and luxurious – just the way we like it.
