Monopoly Game Board Made of Gold Encrusted With Gemstones on Display

The Museum of American Finance in New York City has a very special item on display. It is a monopoly board game made out of solid gold and encrusted with jewels. The precious golden board has been created by the jeweler Sidney Mobell. He started work on it in 1988 and it was his passion that made him work on it every day for an entire year till the board was created in its final form.

The board is made in 23 carat gold plate, and all the little houses and hotels are 18 carat solid gold. Genuine rubies and sapphires have been used for chimneys. The light bulb replica is created out of a glittering topaz. The dice is also 18K solid gold and there are diamonds embedded in each one of the numbers. Even the tokens are solid gold.

With so much gold and gemstones used it is obviously the most expensive Monopoly game on the planet. The estimated value of the board according to its creator is about $2 million. Mobell had donated the game to the Smithsonian in 2003. Museum of American Finance which is an affiliate of the Smithsonian will display it until October 2012.
