Collector Buys World’s Costliest White Wine For £75,000

Every so often, we get a new record breaking price from the world of luxury wines. The latest record-maker is a 200-year-old bottle of white wine, the 1811 Chateau d’Yquem. This rare white wine now holds the distinction of being the most expensive bottle of white wine ever sold. Collector Christian Vanneque purchased the luxury spirit for a whopping £75,000 at the Ritz in London. Vanneque was formerly head sommelier at Michelin-starred Paris restaurant La Tour d’Argent.

By itself, the Chateau d’Yquem is loved by wine collectors and enthusiasts. It is among the costliest sweet white wines. It is also regarded as one of the finest. A high concentration of sugar gives it a better drinking life than other wines. But having 1811 as the year of production, pushes up the appeal of this wonderful wine even further. The climate that year, as well as reviews from tastings have suggested that 1811 was a special year for wine making. Moreover, the coming of the Great Comet in the same year, was widely regarded as an auspicious sign. Winemakers of the time believed that the Great Comet enhanced the quality of a wine.

According to Vanneque who bought the wine, the 1811 Chateau d’Yquem is “very special”. In the past, this rarest of rare wines has only been tasted three times. Each time it received top ratings of five out of five stars. However, Vanneque has not purchased this luxury wine merely as an investment. He promises that this is “also going to be an enjoyment”. Vaneqque plans to store the wine in a bullet-proof, temperature-controlled showcase in his Bali restaurant, SIP Sunset Grill.
