If you set out to create a list of the ‘world’s most expensive’, it will prove to be a daunting challenge as there is literally no limits to the amount a piece of art can fetch, primarily due to the abundant availability of wealthy connoisseurs of art across the globe. This abundance of patrons has now led to the world’s most expensive photograph, which has been sold at a Sotheby’s auction in London for a staggering $3.3 million. Known as the 99 Cent II Diptychon, this photograph was taken by the renowned photographer, Andreas Gursky. This rather conventional looking photograph has also set a new record for being the most expensive photograph by a living photographer. 99 Cent II Diptychon essentially captures a crammed department store and the photograph can be found in Mr. Gursky’s collection, which he has created for the rich  connoisseurs. This particular photograph has always been at the center of high figure sales, as a pervious print of 99 Cent II Diptychon was sold for $2.25 million in May 2006, while another print fetched a whopping $2.48 million in November, 2006.
Andrea Gursky, born on January 15, 1955 has been garnered widespread acclaim for his rchitecture and landscape color photographs. This brilliant artist has not only achieved great success in terms of monetary benefits, but has even won the hearts of critics as well. Photographs from Mr. Gursky are known to be exhibited at some of the most reputed galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Tate Modern, London etc. and currently the 99 Cent II Diptychon is on display at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Turkey.
