Christie’s have planned some serious business for April. They would be conducting the Magnificent Jewels sale in New York on April 12. With the gold prices going through the roof, even new jewelry costs have gone up dramatically but when you come to rare, exclusive pieces, some with historical significance, the prices simply spiral to the stratosphere. There are some lots in the auction planned for April, that might create a record in terms of prices and valuations.
The highlight of The Magnificent Jewels sale will definitely be the 10.09 carat fancy vivid purplish pink diamond. It is creating a buzz already amongst the experts, auctioneers and the very high end of collectors and buyers. The pre sale estimates worked out by the auctioneers is in the range of $12 million to $15 million. It is to be seen if the diamond over shoots the estimates or not. It is a distinct possibility that the rare piece of stone might create a new record or come close to it.
The Vivid Pink, a 5 carat cushion cut diamond that was sold in December 2009 had fetched a price of over $2.1 million per carat. This is a record of per carat price for any diamond sold at any auction around the world. Incidentally, The Vivid Pink was auctioned by the Christie’s Hong Kong. There have been few other pink diamonds that have recorded impressive prices at auctions in the last 15 months or so. We might be reporting about new record prices in April.
