We have a piece of information about the Swann Galleries’ April 2 auction, that will attract not just book lovers but serious collectors too like bees to honey. Among the many fine texts up for sale, you will also find the most famous version of the Haggadah, which is the religious text of the Jews. Called the Szyk Haggadah, this holy book was illustrated by Arthus Szyk in Poland way back in the 1930s. The beauty of the detailed pictures has been appreciated the world over.
Last year had a new reprinting of the Szyk Haggadah; each book went for $15,000. And the version that is up for Swann Galleries carries the signature of its famous illustrator as well as that of the editor Cecil Roth. It also flaunts the original 1939 gilt-pictorial blue morocco binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The expected price of this one will be between $15,000 and $25,000.
By the way, the auction will also have a copy of the Golden Cockerel Press Four Gospels, illustrated by Eric Gill, one of only twelve printed on vellum. In other words, do check out the event if in the city. It promises to be quite worth its salt.
