The Batmobile Goes Under The Hammer

There are cars and then, there are cars. Some cars like the legendary Jaguar E-Type which turns fifty this year are the quintessential “lady killers”, thanks to their classic good looks. However, few cars can match up to Batman’s famous car. Irrespective of whether one is a car enthusiast or not, one cannot help glance admiringly, and somewhat enviously, whenever the Batmobile shows up on screen.

As it turns out, the Batmobile could soon drive into a regular Joe’s garage. The famous superhero car was set to go under the hammer at Auctions America last weekend. RM in Fort Lauderdale was to put this much-loved screen vehicle up for sale at the “Collector Cars of Fort Lauderdale”. The event was held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center.

The Batmobile in question is the one that showed up in the 1995 film Batman Forever, which starred Val Kilmer in the role of the masked superhero. Of course, the high-profile movie car is not about to come cheap. According to pre-auction estimates, the Batmobile was expected to sell for anywhere between $200,000 and $275,000. However, this baby is definitely a bargain buy, especially when you consider that only its body mould cost $2.5 million. Add to that another $300,000 for construction.

Will the car be able to withstand bullets as in the movie? That remains to be seen. But what we do know is that this sleek car measures in at a length of 25 feet while its tail fin ensures that the car reaches a height of 10.5 feet. Clearly, parking or driving this superhero car is not for the faint-hearted.
