In the group of fine art auction, Christie tagged a second highest record to its name by ine art auctioneering by producing sales worth $395 million. Known as “L’Odalisque, Harmonie Blueue,” a 1937 Henri Matisse painting bagged the artist a new record as it fetched $33.6 million (€23 million). The pricey painting portrays artist’s much admired models loafing behind a garland placed on a table.
The proud owner of the painting is an anonymous person on whose behalf spokesperson Guy Bennett, who runs Christie’s Impressionist and modern art department in New York battled while bidding and finally essayed the painting to his name on a drop of $30 million ($33.6 mn, including Christie’s buyer’s premium).
The earlier record set by Matisse painting stood at $22 million (€15 million) for “Danseuse dans le fauteuil,” that got sold at Sotheby’s in London in June. Picasso’s 1955 work “Femme accroupie au costume turc (Jacqueline),” also went for $30.8 million while his “Homme a la pipe,” fetched $16.8 million, meeting the artists’ expectations.
