Last month I wrote about the new made-to-order Dandy Trunk by T.T. Trunks which came with its very own iPad holder. Today, it is time to take several steps back in time and be introduced to the rare, vintage Louis Vuitton steamer trunk.
This antique piece from Louis Vuitton is going up for sale via the New Orleans-based M.S. Rau Antiques at a hefty price of $22,500. Dating back to the 1900s, the vintage Louis Vuitton trunk exudes elegance and a certain historicity. Nearly 3.5 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall, the vintage trunk harks back to a time when travelling anywhere was a long drawn process and people packed for several months at a time. You will find similar trunks featured in the much-appreciated luxury book, Louis Vuitton: 100 Legendary Trunks by Abrams.
This piece of luxury luggage has a strong, sturdy frame which has been upholstered by canvas. The Louis Vuitton monogram, which has become such a signature element of the brand is a major feature of this vintage steamer trunk. Perhaps, this is one of the first examples of the iconic design that has become the stuff of aspirations.
The vintage Louis Vuitton Trunk still retains the original trim. Look close and you will find marked metal latches and leather tags, beechwood slats and brass rivets. It is also clear that this piece of luggage is well-travelled. Stuck to its body for scores of years are vintage luxury hotel stickers from around the world. Indeed, luggage like this can fill anybody with the wanderlust.
Just a curiosity, did the Louis Vuitton trunk sell at expected price through M S Rau Antiques – the one that was posted on 3rd Feb 2011? Would love to find out.
Thanks.
