The Red Dot Awards are really prestigious in the design circuit. And winning the 2011 Red Dot Award in the “Fashion and Accessories” category is luxury brand Porsche Design. The design arm of Porsche AG in Stuttgart picked up the award for its P’1700 Cannes moccasin – an example of stylish footwear that thrives on sleek, simple lines.
The P’1700 Cannes moccasin is a simple design based on traditional moccasins. However, the factor that sets it apart from the rest sits on the sole. The designers at Porsche Design have fitted this pair of moccasins with an aluminum insert in the sole. The sole comes without any sort of seaming. Plus, the sole is asymmetrical, partly inspired by racing cars. In short, the new age sole design ensures that the wearer gets a shoe that fits perfectly and is comfortable and stylish at the same time. Porsche Design Group’s CEO, Dr Juergen Gessler said that the design company aimed at creating “durable products” rather than simply follow trends. He said that this was because “trends come and go, but design is forever”.
Porsche Design edged ahead of some 4,400 design submission the world over. The win is significant because less than 20 percent of the entrants manage to win a Red Dot Award. Last year, designer watchmaker Lang & Sohne won the award for its Lange Zeitwork timepiece. The Red Dot Awards are geared toward honoring great designs that combine a style that is timeless with the latest technologies. Clearly, Porsche Design scored on all fronts.
