Patek Philippe Clock and Antique Chinese Bowl Steal The Show At Sotheby’s Hong Kong Auction

Patek Philippe watches and clocks fetch millions of dollars at auctions. A recent Sotheby’s auction held at Hong Kong was no exception. The lovely clock (see below) fetched an amazing $2.3 million at the auction. The pricey clock is known as ‘The Magpie’s Treasure Nest Clock’. It is truly a work of art when you see the intricate craftsmanship that has gone behind it. The dial is made of mother of pearl with sapphire numerals. The centre is set with diamonds and the hands are made of gold and diamonds. The tree has been made out of yellow gold, while the blooming flowers have been fashioned out of blue, yellow and pink agate, and the leaves with green agate. If that wasn’t enough, each flower has been embedded with diamonds and rubies.

The birds nest has also been made beautifully with yellow gold and contains interesting items like a pair of scissors, thimble, spectacles, a ring and an enamel-capped safety pin. All these are treasures collected by a realistically modeled Magpie, swooping over the tree and holding an oval-shaped tanzanite in its beak. The measurements of this piece are: height 52 cm, width 34 cm, and depth 27 cm and has a Swiss B21, quartz movement. It contains a total of 24.95 carats of diamonds, 6.02 carats of sapphires and 13.17 carats of rubies. This 15 kg clock was made in 1992 and was sold to an Asian buyer. The final bid was three times the estimate.

But the star of the auction was a bejewelled Chinese Kangxi ceramic bowl. It fetched an eye popping $9 million, which is 140 times the price it fetched when it was last sold 30 years ago. This bowl is from the Kangxi period that lasted 1662-1722. It is known as the Red Ruby Ground Double Lotus bowl. The auction went on for five days straight and amassed a total of $281 million in sale.
