The year 1911 was a remarkable and memorable year for the wine that was produced from the harvests. And you don’t have to take my word for it as it is the opinion of the wine maker of the top champagne house. A century ago, Moet & Chandon’s chief ‘vigneron’ had declared 1911 an ‘annee memorable’. They understand wine so there must have been something special about the wine produced during the year. As Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Collection 1911 matured it soon took its place as one of the house’s most distinguished Champagnes.
After a century, now in 2011 Moet has agreed to release just 11 half cases of the 1911 Grand Vintage. Each of the limited edition coffrets consists of six bottles of Grand Vintage Collection 1911. The rare wine from the exclusive collection will be put up on display in one of Harrods’ Christmas windows. Tom Stevenson, the Champagne expert had the occasion of tasting the wine at Moët & Chandon in Epernay in July 2011. He described the wine as outstanding and considered it an enormous privilege to have tasted the rare wine.
Normally champagne that has aged for so long turns copper brown in color but the Grand Vintage Collection 1911 is still a beautiful pale yellow gold. Anyone who has had the privilege of tasting the wine is supremely impressed as the nose is still floral and fruity and even after aging for a century it’s still bubbly on the palate. It is elegantly mature and deliciously lively. This memorable vintage champagne has been priced at £65,000. The limited edition release is available exclusively at Harrods’.
