It is amazing to see the way Marilyn Monroe continues to occupy mind space of the people so many years after her demise. In fact, she has grown as a brand over the years and you now have Marilyn Monroe wine also. Several garments worn by her in different movies have fetched astronomical prices at auctions and that’s perhaps the reason why more and more costumes keeps coming back at auctions. Auctioneers, Profiles in History have recently announced that a show stopping stage costume worn by Marilyn Monroe in one of her hit films is set to go under the hammer.
It is a green and black sequined garment which was worn by Monroe for her role in the 1957 film Bus Stop. The pre sale estimate or the guide price has been given as £200,000. The character Marilyn played in that movie was of a naïve yet determined saloon singer with dreams of making it in Hollywood. The auctioneers describe it as one of Monroe’s most iconic looks. Monroe is shown wearing the dress in the promotional posters of the movie. It is one of the more popular images of the legendary star.
In the movie Bust Stop she is wearing this green garment when sings the classic song That Old Black Magic and in the process wins the heart of the cowboy played by Don Murray. This particular piece was created by William Travilla who was Marilyn’s favorite and had created many of her costumes. There are other highlights of the auction including the original movie camera used by George Lucas to film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. It is a Panavision PSR 35mm camera and is expected to fetch £130,000.
