The interest in Marilyn Monroe and hers dress refuses to subside. The iconic white dress she wore in the movie The Seven Year Itch fetched a whopping $4.6 million at an auction this summer. And now there is news of another Marilyn Monroe dress auction. One of her iconic dresses from the movie River of no Return selling for over half a million dollar at an auction. This particular movie was not a success and in fact Marilyn called it her worst ever movie. The Marilyn gown, however was sold to a private buyer for $504,000 at an auction conducted by Julien’s Auctions in China.
Darren Julien, president and CEO of Julien’s Auctions gave the background of the dress. The movie was a Western that was made in 1954. The green velour dress was worn by the legendary star while she sang ‘I’m Gonna File My Claim’. She played the character of Kay Washington in the movie against Robert Mitchum. She played the role of a gambler’s wife. The making of the movie wasn’t very smooth as the conflict between the director Otto Preminger, and Monroe’s acting coach, Natasha Lytess was widely reported at the time.
The critics were impressed by Marilyn Monroe and her performance. The location, the Rocky Mountain landscape and Marilyn’s screen presence were the highlight of the movie. And the legend of the actress lives on. The auction conducted in China was very successful. The other highlight of the auction was bustier wore by Madonna in 1987 during her Who’s That Girl tour. It fetched a very good price of $72,000.
