The number of American households with dogs is huge. The American Pet Products Association estimates the figure to be close to 45 million and as per their study 21% of them travel with their pets. That is over 9 million dogs who travel with their owners. Award winning travel writer, Maggie Espinosa decided to check the scene in Southern California that receives a large number of travelers on their vacations.
Maggie and her dog Marcel set out to find out the best hotels and related establishments that welcome dogs. After all California is considered one of the most pet inclusive regions of the country. Dog Fancy magazine named San Diego “America’s Best City for Dogs” due to its dog-friendly beaches. Maggie’s travels with her dog resulted in The Privileged Pooch: Luxury Travel with Your Pet in Southern California, a guide to 69 hotels, 55 bistros, 56 fun-in-the-sun activities, and 36 trendy shops.
The guide includes hotels and establishments in San Diego, Palm Springs, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. The location of every establishment is indicated through a map and details of pricing and regulations have been mentioned. Espinosa has written the guide in an entertaining commentary style and specially mentioned dedicated services for pets. There are establishments that welcoming toys for pets. Some others have exclusive doggy menus and spas and even dog sitters to dog day care of your pet while you go around the city.
