London Displaces New York to become the Fashion Capital of the World

New York had been reigning as the undisputed fashion capital of the world for long. But two personalities and major events enabled London to overtake Paris and New York to be ranked number one as the fashion capital of the world. The rear of the top five is brought up by cities like Milan and Los Angeles. Global Language Monitor, the Texas-based trend analyzer has tracked the trends in print and social media to rank the cities around the world as fashion capitals. The credit for this dramatic move of London is being given to the tragic suicide of British designer Alexander McQueen, and the Duchess of Cambridge’s stylish nuptials.

The Royal Wedding in April had such enormous curiosity value that it was covered extensively by the media. In fact the Duchess of Cambridge was turned into a global fashion icon. British designer Alexander McQueen committed suicide in February 2010 which brought increased media focus on the already popular fashion house. McQueen’s fashion empire continued to thrive despite his absence and the designer’s protégé and now the artistic director of his label, Sarah Burton had the privilege of designing the wedding gown for the Royal Wedding.

It suddenly brought the focus of the fashion fraternity to London. Bekka Payack of the Global Language Monitor points out the impact of two genuine media stars Kate [Middleton] and Alexander McQueen on the global ranking. The numbers thrown up by their tracking procedure clearly shows that it was their presence that tipped the scale in favor of London over New York. Several senior media analysts feel that New York as a fashion capital, has suffered because of the end of the Sex and the City era. The TV series ended in 2004 and there has been no other major fashion event that could increase the media attention on New York.In the Indian context Delhi has slipped as a fashion capital.
