Jem connoisseurs will hop off their chairs at the sight of this rare yellow diamond, which was recently sold through the auction desk in Geneva for as much as $10.9 million. Though Europe is the middle of big financial troubles, but reports suggest that jewelry sales in Geneva has remained unperturbed.  The auctioneer at Sotheby’s said the bidder who won this wished to stay anonymous and he got the deal through a phone bid. This 110.3 carat pear-shaped diamond has set the world for a yellow variety and is also touted to be one of the largest diamonds that has ever made it to an auction.

Sold by New York based Cora International, the jewel was initially discovered in South Africa last year. The gemologists called this one as fancy vivid yellow and also the the rarest and most desirable colour for a yellow diamond. The rock gets its color from the traces of nitrogen trapped within carbon molecules and hardened over the course of million years. The auction house has originally estimated its worth to be around $11-15 million but with commission and taxes the net amount paid by the buyer turned out to be close to $12.36 million.
