A recent auction of a whisky bottled in 1937 has proved again that old is gold. This auction created a new record for a whisky bottled in the 20th century and the most expensive bottle of whisky went for a whooping 25,200 British pounds including the buyer’s premium. The details of the auction and the record prices achieved were given out by the auctioneer Bonhams’ in Edinburgh.
The Glenfiddich that went under the hammer was distilled before the start of the second world war.. The 70cl bottle was one of only 61 produced in 1937 and formed part of a batch of ten released in 2001. The experts who attended the auction at Bonhams’ said that the single malt smells of fresh peat, burnt leather and oak, and tastes of treacle toffee, crème brule and toasted almonds. This exclusive and rare taste apart from the age of the whiskey boosted its price at the auction. Apart from everything else the fact remains that it is practically impossible to find a bottle of whiskey as old as that.
But you never know when another old bottle of whiskey will come on the market and cause another vigorous round of bidding, creating a new record in terms of price. The world record of 29,400 British Pounds was created in 2007 when a bottle of single- malt whisky distilled and bottled by Bowmore in the 19th century was auctioned and witnessed very hectic bidding.
