It has been thirty years since John Lennon’s death but even now auctions of articles related to him generate a lot of excitement and aggressive bidding. Braswell Galleries’ annual New Year’s Day auction held last Saturday had some Beatles memorabilia and a white suite that was custom made for Lennon by French designer Ted Lapidus. Owner Kathy Braswell was very happy and excited about the successful event which she said was their biggest event of the year.
Now there is more exciting news for John Lennon fans. The first car he bought after passing the driving test will be seen at the auction block next month. The Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe was bought by the Beatle in 1965 and is expected to sell for between 120,000 euros (£99,987) and 170,000 euros (£141,000). Lennon’s biographer, Philip Norman has described how the car was purchased in some detail.
Car dealers descended on the singer’s home to offer him luxury cars after the news came in that John had passed the driving test. The Ferrari caught his eye and paid £2,000 for it. Bonhams will be handling the auction in Paris on February the 5th. A rusted green 1972 Chrysler station wagon Lennon and Yoko Ono owned was recently bought by Hank Gioiella of Darien who paid $5,500 (£3,500) for it.
