Traditional works of art never have and never will go out of fashion, economic recession or not! There have always been a bunch of extremely enthusiastic (and might we add, ‘filthily rich’) collectors who are keen to spend extraordinary amounts of money for older masterpieces. And it is more so today for the current mood is swaying away from contemporary art because of its decreasing value.
Christie’s auctions always garner a lot of interest and talk, however, even that was surpassed recently when a very high-priced furniture piece belonging to the era of the Sun King went under the hammer. Called the Cucci Cabinet, this ornate unit dates back to 1665 to 1675 and just became one of the most expensive furniture in the world. Might we add, the Italian artist and master craftman Domenico Cucci has worked wonders with this creation of his.
The gorgeous cabinet bears the Florentine ‘Pietra dura’ plaques with rather opulent gilt bronze mounts. Then there is the fine and very beautiful figurative carving. Coming back to our previous claim about traditional art, even Christie’s Rep Robert Copley was heard saying that in the past year Christie’s has sold traditional furniture and art to the effect of £140 million.
