Books are no longer the dull creatures of yesteryear. I mean, even Prada has a 706-page tome to catalogue 30 years of innovations. And you can’t just put the Prada in any old bookshelf. Enter, the world’s most expensive bookshelf. Designed by Chile-born, New York-based designer Sebastian Errazuriz, the new functional sculpture is not only a great-looking bookshelf; it is also a work of art.
Named “Metamorphosis“, the new luxury bookshelf was apparently inspired by the ivy vines running across his grandmother’s garden. The result is an exceptionally organic piece. The bookshelf resembles the fluidity of ivy vines as it runs across a wall, holding books along the way. Built out of Baltic birch plywood, this creation by Errazuriz is a limited edition piece that has been hand-carved by Italian firm Horm.
Earlier, Errazuriz had received much acclaim for his Bilbao shelf. Here, he had fitted a real tree branch on to a wall, creating a one-of-a-kind display unit. Perhaps, the Metamorphosis is something of an extension of that earlier piece. Of course, Errazuriz is known for other innovative pieces like his zipper dress and the teddy bear coat. And of course, he charges for his designs. The new Metamorphosis bookshelf comes with a price tag of $75,000. I did mention that it is the most expensive bookshelf in the world.
