Some of the prices fetched at auctions really surprise you. The Kerry Taylor Auctions had organized an auction of dresses of celebrities and the item that took everyone by surprise was the dress that Amy Winehouse wore on the cover of Back To Black. The successful bidder for the dress had to ultimately shell out a significant £43,200. The final price was over four times the pre sales estimates made for the dress. The dress in question was bought by the Fundacion Museo De La Moda, a private fashion museum in Chile. The Marilyn Monroe dress had also exceeded the estimates at an earlier auction.
The auction witnessed some aggressive bidding and competition between several phone bidders and a bidder in the room. The dress was designed by Central Saint Martins graduate Disaya in 2006. Amy Winehouse never bought the dress but it was loaned to her for the album cover shoot and had been archived since then. Earlier this month, the designer donated the dress to the auctioneers Kerry Taylor Auctions with an arrangement to send the proceeds from the sale to go to Amy Winehouse Foundation. It is a charity set up in the memory of the singer to help vulnerable young people.
Mitch Winehouse, father of Amy was overwhelmed by the gesture. He thanked both Disaya the designer and Kerry the auctioneer for their support and the hard work they put in to generate that kind of money. He was very excited as it had given a resounding start to the foundation. He had already planned a trip to Euston to meet a homeless charity who would be getting that money to do some good work. The wedding dress auction also saw Princess Diana’s shoes going under the hammer.
