Karl Lagerfeld to Create a Hotel in Macau

Macau has raced ahead of Las Vegas in terms of revenue backed by the growing traffic of affluent Chinese. According to a report carried by AP, with a gambling revenue of $45 billion in 2013, Macau beat the Las Vegas Strip seven times. It is a huge achievement and has attracted the attention of the luxury industry. Karl Lagerfeld, the renowned designer has also jumped on the bandwagon and will be designing a hotel that will carry his name. Apart from the routine tourists Macau attracts the rich and the super rich who look for ultra luxurious accommodations while they hit the casinos to gamble away some of their excess wealth.

This is the first time that Karl Lagerfeld has decided to create a hotel. He has joined hands with Macau based Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM) to develop a 27o room Karl Lagerfeld Hotel in a 20-story tower in the gambling enclave in southern China. The designer hotel is expected to open its doors for the guests by 2017. The Chanel designer is excited about the idea. SJM is aggressively pursuing the goal of creating designer hotels in Macau. Last September they had announced a Versace-themed hotel designed by the Italian fashion label in the same Lisboa Palace complex. SJM was founded by tycoon Stanley Ho and held a monopoly on gambling in Macau until 2004.

Lagerfeld who is the chief designer for the Chanel and Fendi fashion houses also has his own label. He has a history of experimenting with new activities and has designed clothing as well as a can for Diet Coke. He has also tried his hand on interior designing. He had done up the suites at the Hotel de Crillon as well as the pool at Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo in Monaco. The high rise complex is coming up in Macau’s Cotai neighborhood will have casinos, restaurants and shopping and more than 2,000 hotel rooms, according to SJM. Lagerfeld has a track record of making successful forays into new areas and it is highly likely that his hotel project will also become a huge success.
