Germany Leads in Manufacturing Super Yachts, Ahead of Italy and Netherland

Forget the recession, the luxury super-yacht business is booming. More and more millionaires and billionaires are buying these uber luxe yachts, and the luxury features in these yachts keeps getting more and more ostentatious. And according to Der Spiegel magazine, Germany has overtaken  Netherlands and Italy in this business. Specialist shipyards in the port cities of Hamburg and Bremen caters to a clientele that boats of names such as Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Muammar Gaddafi’s son, and the Russian owner of Chelsea FC, Roman Abramovich.

Michael Breman, the head of sales at the super-yacht builders Lürssen in Bremen whose luxury vessels start at a whopping  €50m (£43m) said that there has been an unsurpassed surge in their yacht sales, which seems contradictory to the global economic situation. And it seems the demands of their clients is getting more and more eccentric. One guy asked for showers that could squirt out champagne instead of water!

And the manufacturers are also more than happy to comply to these demands as long as it is not illegal or nautically questionable. The biggest yacht right now is the 536ft motor yacht, Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich, which was completed by the Hamburg yard, Blohm + Voss last year. But it will soon be overtaken by Lürssen’s 590 feet yacht that is being made for an Arab customer.
