Zig Zag Chairs Lead The Line

Famous luxury brand Sotheby’s saw a lot of excitement last week owing to a pair cool chairs. The 1938 original Zig Zag chairs in reference were designed by Gerrit Rietveld and had people falling in love with its modern contours at first sight. Perhaps, that will be much explained by the price it was sold at, which, by the way, is $40,625.

The simple yet creative chairs are made from painted wood and brass hardware keeping the cantilever concept in mind. Originally manufactured in Netherlands by Gerard van de Groenekan, De Bilt and later by Cassina in Italy, these chairs have broken pre-existing grounds paving the way for more modern approaches to home decor and furniture.
Each chair consists of four elements joined with a system dovetailing such that under the Zig Zag chair’s visual simplicity actually lies a relatively complex construction. The original chairs were influenced by the ‘De Stijl’ movement in the early 30s but the modern versions of the same chairs are available at Hive Modern at a price of $161 per piece.
