Anna Wintour has added another prestigious feather to her cap. The British-born editor-in-chief of the hugely popular American Vogue has been honored with a Legion of Honor medal in France. On 6 July, Wintour was bestowed with the Chevalier (Knight) of the Order, the highest order of decoration in France. This long-standing award was established by no less than Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. The British-born American Vogue editor made her way to the Elysee Palace last Wednesday to receive her award. Bestowing the honor on her was French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy himself had only just returned from a vacation in the Mediterranean with his now pregnant wife Carla Bruni.
The New York editor was elegantly turned out for the award-giving ceremony. Wintour was dressed in a glittering haute couture skirt suit from Chanel as the French President pinned on the Legion of Honor medal to her lapel. Interestingly, Wintour’s chosen outfit debuted on the fashion runway only the night before. This is not the first time that Wintour has earned such a prestigious award. In 2008, Wintour joined the prestigious ranks of The Order of the British Empire, when she was granted the OBE status by Queen Elizabeth.
Wintour is a deserving candidate for such honors. The editor is highly respected within the fashion industry and she has helmed the American Vogue since taking over in 1988. This perfectionist from the fashion industry now joins a number of other iconic personalities who have been awarded the French Legion of Honor. These include Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani among others.
