The character of Holly Golightly was made famous by Audrey Hepburn in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The outdoor scenes of the movie were shot in New York and she was shown as living in a Manhattan Brownstone townhouse at 169 East 71st Street. The townhouse made famous by the movie changed hands recently and was sold for $5.97 million, slightly above the asking price. The luxury real estate was listed last year in December for an asking price of $5.85 million. The New York Observer had carried the story about the sale of the iconic house. The paper has been tracking celebrity homes for sale. There is lot of curiosity about such homes and you can take a tour of celebrity homes on wealth TV. According to the paper the house was bought by Costalea Holdings Limited, a Cyprus based company whose ownership details were not available at the moment.
The Townhouse Sold by Peter E Bacanovic
The house belonged to former Merrill Lynch broker Peter E Bacanovic who had originally purchased it in the year 2000 for $1.8 million. Bacanovic became a controversial figure after he was jailed for five months for his involvement in the Martha Stewart insider trading scandal. He became infamous after that scandal however his house, a four story 15-foot-wide Upper East Side townhouse had become famous way back in 1961 when it figured prominently in the Audrey Hepburn film. Bacanovic told the paper that he sold the house because it was time for a change.

The movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s was based on the novel by Truman Capote. Audrey Hepburn played the character of Holly Golightly who is a New York socialite who becomes interested in a new man in her apartment building. The Manhattan brownstone townhouse served as the backdrop of the movie and even after 50 years the house is intact and looks the same except the green and white striped window awnings visible in the movie are not there anymore. The interior of the house was shot in the studios and not in the actual house; however Baconovic’s broker at Corcoran claimed that the party scene in the movie where Miss Golighty wore a bed sheet seems to have been filmed in the living room of the actual house and not in a studio. The house is now configured in two duplex apartments.
