She has been buying director for Harvey Nichols, president and CEO at Alexander McQueen, and has put in a turn as managing director for Louis Vuitton’s UK, Ireland and Scandinavia businesses. The latest feather in Sue Whiteley’s cap is becoming head of Givenchy.
Under the umbrella of LVMH, Givenchy is a close second to only Dior. The Paris-based fashion house has dressed the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Onassis. However, the brand that once stood for a stately elegance now offers a more modern, somewhat edgy appeal thanks to the efforts of creative director Riccardo Tisci. The brand now lists clients like rock chick Courtney Love.
As Whiteley steps up to head the fashion house, she could soon become the most powerful Brit to head an international brand of this stature. But even as she enters the Givenchy house, she admits that “conspicuous excess” is not all that luxury is about. Instead, she believes in “Simplicity, refinement and craftsmanship.” Incidentally, Whiteley was interested in fashion and designer wear from an early age. At 13, she saved up enough to buy a pair of designer jeans.
Her plans for Givenchy may not be revealed just yet. However, Whiteley is convinced that the way forward is with Tisci in tow, despite talk that Tisci might replace John Galliano at Dior. But Whiteley is hoping otherwise. She likens the Givenchy creative director to none less than Alexander McQueen, describing his work as genius. In the meanwhile, Whiteley is sure to be enjoying her time at the fashion house.
