Street Fashion Photographers Turn into Paparazzi during the Fashion Week

The Fall 2011 Fashion Week season gave birth to rumors about senior designers triggered by the John Galliano incident in the Paris nightclub. There were rumors doing the rounds about Stefano Pilati at YSL, Hannah MacGibbon at Chloe, and Christophe Decarnin at Balmain and their standing with their respective fashion houses. Imran Amed of Business of Fashion has highlighted a couple of other trends that became stronger during the season.

The professionalization of street fashion photography has transformed it into paparazzi. The scene at Jardin des Tuileries, site of many major Paris shows, is getting out of hand because of these aggressive paparazzi. The scene was no different from the Hollywood bars and clubs frequented by the celebrities. You actually had photographers accosting editors as they came out of shows. Amed explains the reason of this aggressiveness by pointing out that these street style photographs find a ready market in international editions of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar for as much as $1,000.

The other trend is also a result of commercial pressures. The increasing demand for seating at the shows has made the designers cut back the number of guests they host. The result was evident at Celine where many senior editors from UK had to stand through the show. The serious bloggers from the fashion world are also finding it difficult to get access to Givenchy or YSL. The affluent consumers are taking up bulk of the seating space. The department stores are also taking up seats on behalf of their important clients. Their logic is simple that a woman spending $1 million at a store is entitled to VIP treatment.
