Can you guess why some one would call a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic the ‘Mona Lisa’ of cars. Well because it is a rare piece of art. It is beautiful. It is mysterious and above all it is the most expensive. This 1936 Bugatti is on display at the Mullin Automotive Museum, Oxnard in California. When you see it you almost start understanding the meaning of the term priceless. Otherwise how would you explain why someone would be willing to pay $35 million for a mere car.
Someone would be paying that much means there must be others who must be very close to matching it. But the strange part is that after paying the astronomical amount you want to stay anonymous. Yes the buyer who purchased the car is anonymous. He purchased it from the estate of Dr. Peter Williamson, a prominent neurologist who had bought the car at a Sotheby’s auction here in Los Angeles in June 1971.
He had bought it for a then princely sum of $59,000 and held on to it for almost four decades. There are many car nuts in the world but how many of them have that kind of money. The cheaper option obviously is to buy replicas or go in for cheaper cars.
