Snow globes hold our fondest memories – vacations, festivities, special occasions and so on. But rarely do snow globes become limited edition art. Artists Ligorano/Reese have taken the humble snow globe into the realm of artistry, using them to represent twenty of the most important movements in the world of modern and contemporary art.
As always, the snow globes tell a story. But in this case, it is the story of art. The History of Art snow globes follow the various influential movements that colored modern and contemporary art, with each snow globe standing for a different style. The key is that through each snow globe, Ligorano/Reese attempt to recreate that particular style or school of art. For instance, the sharp bold strokes of red uphold the inherent freedom and independence of Abstract Expressionism, while the barely there lettering captures the essence of Minimalism. The handcrafted snow globes are laser-cut and laminated.
Twenty snow globes uphold twenty different movements. These are: Abstract Expressionism, Bauhaus, Conceptual Art, Cubism, Dada, De Stijl, Expressionism, Fauvism, Fluxus, Futurism, Minimalism, New Media, Op Art, Performance Art, Photo Realism, Pop Art, Superflat, Surrealism, Video Art and YBA. Of these, I love the youthfulness of the Pop Art snow globe and the quirky appeal of the Superflat model. Surrealism also gets big points from me, as do Photo Realism and and Futurism.
The entire collection of twenty snow globes is available for sale at $7,200. Only ten complete sets will be made available though. In case $7,200 is too high a price or if you do not like all the pieces, you can buy singles at the rate of $400 apiece.
