Skipton Auction Registers Record Price for a Working Dog

How much do you estimate a working dog can cost? The answer is 6,000 guineas which is equivalent to £6,300. This is a new record price paid for a 13 month old tri colored bitch named Dewi Fan from John Bell of Parks Farm Howden, Selby. It was not a local buyer but an overseas one who did not want to be identified. The earlier record of the highest price for a dog was £5,145 or 4,900 guineas held by another dog from John Bell.

Welshman Aled Owen of Penyfed, Ty-Nant, Corwen, Denbighshire has bred dogs who have won him the World Sheep Dog Trials championship. Mr. Owen is set to defend his title at this year’s World Trials at Lowther Park, Penrith, Cumbria, in September. The prices are influenced by the names of earlier trial winners. Dewi Fan is by the renowned Dewi Tweed who landed the 2009 International Trials at Lowther Park for breeder Richard Millichap, from Port Talbot in South Wales.

Welsh vendors and purchasers were in the forefront and when Dewi Fan arrived with a lot number 83 a large crowd of potential buyers remained and the smooth-coated, prick-eared bitch did not disappoint them and gave sparkling performances in all disciplines in her field trial. Second highest price of the day was much lower at 2,600guineas or £2,730.
