Russia is not exactly known for selling its art in the western market. Russian art forever has been a secret which the western world has sought to discover, but the oppressive governments of Russia have always silenced artists into underground. Thus, most Russian artists hardly got to sell their art abroad, leading to a dismal Russian art scene. Now, From April 21, 2010 to April 23, 2010, 600 lots of Russian art would be displayed at Sotheby’s and some 359 would be auctioned off.
One could check out paintings by Pavel Tchelitchew from the personal collection of actress Ruth Ford. Some of the other prominent painters are Stanislaw Zukowski, Nicolas Kalmakoff and Vladimir Davidovic Baranov-Rossine whose works would be auctioned off. Yuri Ivanovich Pimenov’s Morning Windows is expected to fetch $250,000 to $350,000.
Konstantin Egorovic Makovskij is the highlight of Christie’s in New York. Both Christie’s and Sotheby’s are offering Russian art to curators and art collectors and most art works are being offered at prices generally less than $400,000, as if it were less.
