Romain Jerome Releases Limited Edition DeLorean DNA Watch

The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) had a very short life as the company that debuted in 1981 had to abruptly give up its dream run in 1983 after the infamous government cocaine sting operation ended John DeLorean’s career and that of his company. Romain Jerome has created a limited edition watch with the aim of capturing the magic of the car that left a huge impact on pop culture in its time. The car achieved iconic status after Steven Spielberg used it as a time machine in his 1985 film Back To The Future. The popular film gave the DMC-12 automobile model new life. It acquired a new status as a sci-fi symbol after it was depicted as a time machine in the movie.

There are 6,500 DeLorean DMC-12 Cars in Existence

John DeLorean had positioned the DMC-12 as a sports car ahead of its time. Its gull-wing doors looked futuristic. The car with a rear-engine lay-out was noticed first for its unpainted stainless steel body. These design elements were not invented by DeLorean but he combined them well to create a dramatic effect. So many years down the line the design has not lost its appeal and there is a demand for the cars that exist today. Today there are about 6,500 DeLorean DMC-12 cars still in existence. A Texas based company that owns the rights to the DeLorean name maintains and restores the cars. A well restored DeLorean still commands a price of $60,000 or more. If you are lucky you might even come across some of those cars on the road. Some of the replicas of the Back To The Future car are also known to exist.

Each Watch Will Have Metal From the Original Car

Romain Jerome had been talking about creating a DeLorean DNA watch for some years now. The DNA concept has made a direct connect to the car. The limited edition creation will have only 81 pieces as the car had debuted in 1981 and each one of them will have metal from an original DeLorean DMC-12 in the bezel of the watch. The case of the watch is stainless steel and on the rear of the watch is a case back plate that features an engraving of the DeLorean DMC-12 car with the gull wing doors open. The yellow red and white in the subsidiary seconds dial remind you of the car’s famous tail lights.

The Watch Has Been Priced at $15,900

There isn’t more of DeLorean in the dial. The dial is in mostly brushed steel however there are black painted sections that seem to be inspired by the seams of the car’s body panels. Inside the watch Jerome has opted for a Swiss mechanical automatic caliber RJ001-CH movement. The inspiration from the car extends to the strap of the watch also. The watch features an upholstery black leather strap with gray stitching. It is the same scheme that you find in the seats of the car. A production run of only 81 pieces has been planned and each of them will carry a price tag of $15,900. The release of the watch comes at an appropriate time as the Texas based owners of the brand have confirmed that they would be releasing the electric version of the car some time in 2013.
