Rolls Royce has been like the royalty amongst luxury cars. There have been more expensive cars but it has maintained its position as the car with the sophistication of the highest level. The Royals around the world have always had some of them in their fleet and they come up for auctions regularly, one of the most famous being the Star of India Rolls Royce once owned by the Maharaja of Rajkot. The upcoming Goodwood Auction by Bonham’s is going to feature another historic edition of vintage Rolls Royce.
It is one of the last surviving units of the 1912 Double Pullman 40/50 HP Limousine series. One of the finest examples of Rolls Royce engineering and craftsmanship, the vintage Rolls is expected to fetch $3.2 million in the auction. Over the years this car has been part of many high profile car collections. The previous owners include John M. Stephens, John C. Sword and Denis de Ferranti. This particular piece bearing chassis number 1907 was one of the first units in the series and it was the Silver Ghost that gave Rolls Royce the reputation as the maker of the best car in the world.
The cars in this series had to face two world wars and most of them were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Corgi Toys had chosen this model in mid 1960s to be part of their Corgi Classic series. This also led to the model being called the Corgi Rolls Royce. However this would not be the most expensive Rolls as the honor of being the most expensive Rolls Royce Phantom goes to the unit that boasted of solid gold linings and last changed hands for a staggering $8.2 million.
