Rare red diamonds up for auction at Sotheby’s

Australia will see at Sotheby’s upcoming April 12 auction, its first red diamond ever to be offered for public auction. This will be even more significant as it will be the Australian branch’s first standalone jewelry sale.

The rare red diamond is actually the purplish-red Argyle diamond. This 0.82 carat diamond is set into a ring and is surrounded by sparkling blue diamonds in a round brilliant-cut diamond surround, all of this encrusted in platinum. The value of this gorgeous piece of jewelry is being estimated at between 700,000 to 1 million Australian dollars or US$645,065 to US$921,556. To ensure that its authenticity is not questioned, the diamond will be accompanied by a letter from Argyle Diamonds certifying its rarity.

Sotheby’s has stated that though Argyle pink diamond deposits have been discovered in Western Australia but very few red diamonds, considered amongst the rarest, have been found.

Accompanying this rare jewel will be other stunning colored stones like a double strand of emerald beads with a diamond set valuated between $9,676 to $11,519.Two other rings, one made of sapphire and diamond (estimated between $23,034 to $32,248) and the other made of emerald and diamond (estimated between $64,497 to $82,907) will also be up for auction.
