Anybody who claims to be a prolific photog will definitely know about Leica. The German optics company has long been in the business of tossing out some really kickass camera stuff. This orange chunky casing is actually a rare 1970 underwater housing for the Leica M4 camera. It was available for sale on eBay where after 3 bids it raked in an amount of$15,200. The auction description said that this housing was extremely rare and in Mint condition. It was originally built for US Navy and comes with the original carrying case and instructions manual.
This underwater casing is quite rare for only 50 were originally made and then only few are known to still exist. The makers were Ernst Leitz Canada Ltd Midland Ontario, in 1970. The casing is mostly an airtight container to keep the gadget safe. It also features two handles to facilitate grip when the user is wearing gloves. Then there are two gaps in the relief around the outside which is housed inside the lens 90/2.8 Elcano, suggest the possibility of including a hood with snap-on. This version of the underwater casing was supplied to U.S Navy divers.
The price at which it was finally sold off speaks volumes about this casing which will be the most coveted collectible for any photography enthusiast. It is as good as owning a piece of history in itself. It is common knowledge that Leica cameras, lenses, accessories and sales literature are collectibles. Leica cameras sporting military markings carry very high premiums and this one too seconds that theory.
