Prabal Gurung is an unusual fashion star. He is unusual, because he likes doing things differently. He manages to add a touch that makes his creations different and new. He has deservedly won the CFDA award and is already working on new concepts and collections. For his first foray into resort wear Prabal has collaborated with another emerging talent — M.I.A.-approved Baltimore dance-rap artist Rye Rye. The dance rap artist will be starring in a music video titled ‘New Thing’ for the launch of the new collection.
Prabal explained that the idea behind the music video was to bring other creative minds to back the collection and inspire the existing customers as well as the new You Tube generation. Prabal has been following the films created by other design houses and has appreciated the different interpretations of the collections. He has been able to bring out through this film what he has assimilated over the years. The designer who claims Michelle Obama as a fan opted for a video because it was the best medium to showcase the new look of his resort wear. Music videos have always been a source of inspiration for him.
The music video was the result of thinking outside the box. Since he was doing resort wear for the first time he wanted its bright and graphic elements highlighted properly so that the viewer could appreciate it. It also gave him the opportunity to collaborate with exciting new talent which can be an invigorating experience. The collections hallmarks, bright pops of hot pink, yellow and green offset by a graphic black and white theme, florals, laser-cut polka dots, ribbon embroidery and hand-burnt sequins dictated the concept of the video. It wasn’t very difficult to decide on the look that would complement Rye Rye. The final edited version of video will definitely inspire a new generation of designers.
