Post-Makeover, Sabi Sabi’s Earth Lodge Blends In With The Surrounding Nature

The Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve has won numerous awards over the years. The property offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife spotting, while providing the best of luxury accommodation. And now, Sabi Sabi has renovated and remodeled its South African game lodge, the Earth Lodge, making it blend in with and celebrate the surrounding nature. Geoffrey Armstrong, an artist and designer who has a long association with Earth Lodge, carried out the renovations. In the new design, Armstrong has used a lot of natural materials. So there are generous doses of sisal and wood. The color palette is also very nature oriented. Armstrong has made it a point to use natural colors such as raw ivory.

On walking into the Earth Lodge, one cannot help being mesmerized by the intriguing use of twigs and branches in chandeliers. The twigs and branches in these cases are painted in metallic colors. Additionally, there are several functional sculptures built out of salvaged trees. A fine example stands within the Earth Lodge’s Amber Presidential Suite. Here, the headboard for the bed is unlike anything else you may have seen before. Armstrong took seven months to carve this headboard. The finished product gives the impression that the tree is growing from the head of the bed and extending into the ceiling.

The new day bar at Earth Lodge has sunken stone-topped tables in the pool, which offer the opportunity to spot wildlife even over a leisurely lunch. The Earth Lodge offers a range of wildlife safaris and picnics. Plus, it has an art gallery, a spa, a meditation garden, a well-stocked wine cellar and more. Luxury suites here cost upwards of $1,228 per person per night.
