Adolf Hitler, the most despised man in the history of the world perhaps (he is seen constantly battling the likes of Osama bin Laden and George Bush for the top spot), is back in news. A picture if his playing chess with Vladimir Lenin has cropped up and is creating quite a buzz. A very extraoridinary piece, this photograph will be put up for sale at Mullock’s auction house in Shropshire in october.
This image of Hitler in a pensive but maybe a relaxed mood playing chess with Lenin was created by Hitlers art teacher Emma Lowenstramm in Vienna. Way back in 1909, Hitler was a jobbing artist while Lenin remained in exile. And the house where they would meet for a game of chess actually blonged to a well-respected Jewish family. So when World War II struck, this family left the house leaving all their possessions including this picture and the chess set with the housekeeper. It is this housekeeper’s grandson who is now putting up the picture for auction.
Not just that, the picture also bears the signatures of both the dictators on the reverse. No wonder, its price has been estimated around $65,570.
