Philippe Starck Collaborates with Baccarat to Present Crystal Flutes in a New Look

Philippe Starck, the 62 year old genius has collaborated again with luxury brand Baccarat to celebrate the 170th anniversary of Baccarat’s classic mouth-blown crystal glass collection and the result is the Harcourt for which Starck has turned the flutes black. Starck had earlier turned the company’s classic clear chandelier black which might have shocked a lot of people but now each piece sells for as much as $66,000.

Starck keeps receiving several proposals to work with different brands but he accepts rarely. But he enjoys working with Baccarat as he describes the collaboration as a sparkling, surreal cocktail. Starck does not start from a concept but begins with a vision and then moves to a concept and finally creates an object. And that’s why he is particular about working with a partner that shares the same way of thinking.

Baccarat realizes the importance of producing modern crystal ware, even as it relishes its heritage. Baccarat has been making crystal ware in the little town of Baccarat, two hours outside Paris, since 1764. It takes years to master the craft of delicately sculpting molten crystal, and blowing it into shape. Only 170 luxury sets of six clear and black flutes have been made and each will sell for around €3,000 ($4,100).
