One of the bestsellers for Omega is their Speedmaster “Moonwatchâ€. This range is very similar to the watch, the astronauts of Apollo XI were wearing during their trip to the moon and moonwalk. Quite understandably so, this watch caught the fascination of many during that generation and continues to do so, even 40 years after the moon-landing. But Omega does not take this interest for granted. Every year the brand brings out a limited edition version of this range to perk up the interest. These limited edition versions have become something of a tradition, and Omega fans look forward to the new collection every year. And I must say the talented designers at Omega never disappoint.
However finding themes to base the new designs on are getting difficult. For the 2012 limited edition, they celebrate the last moon landing, which took place in 1972, instead of the first lunar landing of 1969. This will mark the 40th anniversary of Apollo XVII. Eugene Cernon, who was on this mission, became the last man to walk on the moon. He also happens to be an Omega brand ambassador. Omega actually keeps a track of all its famous customers, and why not.
I must say that the latest edition of the Moonwatch is one of the best so far. You don’t have to be a watch connoisseur to see how exquisite it looks. For this version, the dial an engraving of Apollo XVII mission patch in sterling silver. It has the face of Apollo, the solar system and the moon. Though the entire dial of the Speedmaster has been replaced, most of the hands and other markers have been retained. The pieces of this edition will also have a unique case-back. The watch will have a 42mm wide steelcase and will be powered by Speedmaster’s Omega caliber 1861 manually wound chronograph movement. Keeping in tune with the celebration of the 1972 moon-landing, only 1,972 watches will be produced in this limited edition.
