Oftentimes, old age homes conjure up images of loneliness, an overpowering gloom and shabby rooms. But not this one. Sure, it is a tad pricey, but it certainly makes you want to start saving up for the post-retirement life. Coming up under the Abbeyfield accommodation scheme in Girton, Cambridgeshire, is an old people’s home that promises to treat its elderly residents to five-star treatment. And with apartment prices that start from £220,000 for a single-bedroom apartment and that go up to £350,000 for a three-bedroom one, you should not be expecting any less.
Aimed at the baby boomer generation, these luxury homes are being created under housing charity Abbeyfield in a bid to “revolutionize” older people’s lives. 76 apartments will be available on rent or sale. Each apartment will include a fully-equipped kitchen, a bathroom, a balcony (or a patio) and emergency and security systems. The luxury homes will also have easy access to a clubhouse with a pool, a gym and a restaurant. Abbeyfield spokesperson Manuela White revealed that this is a first of its kind development in the region. The apartments should be ready by next spring.
Speaking for the baby boomer generation, White revealed that it is important to her age group that when they age they can live in a nice home with enough things to keep busy. And it is not just about “coffee mornings and bingo” as she puts it. She is talking about opportunities that will keep the elderly community socially active. So look out for jazz quartets, visiting lectures, movie screenings and more. Established in 1956 by Richard Carr-Gromm, the Abbeyfield Society currently operates in over 700 locations in the UK and in 16 nations.
