Lizzi and Jonathan Tisch known philanthropists and art lovers have donated $10 million to the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. The statement to the effect was released on Tuesday. The donation will enable the museum to completely renovate the costume related galleries and the new design would make the space more flexible. Thomas P Campbell, Director of the museum said that the renovated galleries along with study collection and conservation centre would be ready to receive visitors in early 2012.

The Metropolitan Museum is holding a large collection of costumes as the combined holdings of the Met and the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection was transferred to them in early 2009 and the new facility will make it possible to display the entire holding on site. Museum’s dramatic re-thinking of the display of historic costume and contemporary fashion also become a possibility now.

Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute is supported by the Irene Lewisohn Costume Reference Library, known to be one of the world’s most famous fashion libraries. The transfer of the costume collection from the Brooklyn Museum has made the institute’s collection comprehensive with fashionable dresses and regional costumes from parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and the America dating to as far as the 17th century. The Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery will do justice to the important collection.
