Trust Karl Lagerfeld to always be in the news. Last heard, Lagerfeld’s Chanel was teaming up with French luxury brand Colette for a pop-up store in Paris. The latest from the man behind Chanel is a fall-winter collection for the luxury fashion brand. Lagerfeld’s autumn collection was unveiled at the Grand Palais on Tuesday. The new line bore sharp contrast to his spring summer show, which had Parisian gardens as its theme.
Lagerfeld’s fall-winter collection offered a completely different feel. The mood was darker, in keeping with the autumnal experience. But it was not just the colours. Other elements added to the overall darker mood. The runway was a wooden boardwalk that had been covered with volcanic dust. So as the models walked down, the dust crunched under their feet. The soundtrack worked well with the designs and the ambience. It was “The Forest” by The Cure, a number about a man who goes into the forest looking for a woman.
The show-starting outfit was a black cape draped over a red cardigan. In its wake came a range of other outfits, with silhouettes based on those of skinny distressed jeans or looser trousers with chequered cuffs. Lagerfeld’s evening wear donned a more feminine touch. On display was a lovely 1930s pantsuit worn with an embroidered lace blouse. On a more romantic note, there was a panelled grey dress with puffed shoulders. The footwear of the season were kitten heel shoes and uncluttered boots.
This ready-to-wear line from Chanel was showcased to mark the nine-day prêt-a-porter season in Paris. Over the years, Chanel’s has been the biggest show at the event.
